Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is an American fusion power company based in Devens, Massachusetts.
Founded in 2018 as a spin-off from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), CFS aims to build small, commercial fusion power plants to provide clean energy and address climate change. The company has raised over $2 billion in funding, making it the highest-funded private fusion company globally. CFS is developing two key projects: SPARC, a compact high-field tokamak designed to demonstrate net energy gain by 2027, and ARC, a 400 MW commercial pilot plant expected to power around 150,000 homes by the early 2030s. Both projects utilize high-temperature superconducting magnets developed in collaboration with MIT. CFS collaborates with various partners, including Dominion Energy for the ARC project, and engages with policymakers and suppliers to advance the fusion energy ecosystem. The company envisions a future where fusion energy plays a central role in the global energy transition.
