New York Sun Works (NYSW) is a non-profit organization focused on enhancing K-12 education through sustainability science and climate education.
Founded in 2004 by Ted Caplow, NYSW started with the Science Barge, a floating urban farm on the Hudson River. Today, it operates in over 300 public schools across New York City and Northern New Jersey, reaching more than 140,000 students annually. NYSW's core mission revolves around three pillars: building innovative hydroponic science labs in urban schools, educating students and teachers about sustainability, and engaging communities to tackle environmental challenges. The organization has developed the Hydroponic Classroom, which allows students to grow crops using advanced hydroponic technology. Additionally, NYSW offers a specialized curriculum that integrates urban agriculture and engineering into science classes, along with professional development for educators. Through its initiatives, NYSW aims to foster a generation of environmental innovators and climate leaders.
